Mid-Michigan doctor pleads guilty to conspiracy charges

Posted: Updated:
LAPEER COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan doctor charged in three patient overdose deaths could spend up to eight years behind bars for defrauding Medicare.

Dr. Hatem Ataya has agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy charges. Prosecutors said that from 2009 through June of last year Ataya schemed with the owner of a home health care company to provide referrals in exchange for kickbacks.

Prosecutors said the referrals lead to more than $4 million in fraudulent claims against Medicare.

Ataya will be sentenced in the conspiracy next month.

The overdose deaths are a different case out of Lapeer County.
