Residents are still feeling the effects of a tornado one year after it tore through Mid-Michigan.

Homes were damaged and property was destroyed when the EF-2 tornado touched down in Saginaw and Tuscola counties.

"Everything happened so fast you didn't have time to do nothing," said Raymond Cayer, with Diamond C. Saddlery.

Cayer remembers when the tornado struck and changed everything for him - his home and his business.

"I didn't take two steps and it was all over. Store gone, house gone, roof gone, building smashed," Cayer said.

Seeing your home flattened to the ground would be enough to make anyone want to give up, but not Cayer. He said his first thought as he looked over the damage was how to fix it.

"Well, you just gotta pull up your bootstraps and the faster you can get it done the better," Cayer said.

On the one year anniversary of the storm Cayer has a new store, a new home and new attitude. He said it took a lot of work to get to this point.

"Every day, daylight to dark or after dark even," Cayer said.

He said he is still in a fight with his insurance company over the incident a year ago. He rebuilt everything with money out of his own pocket.

Cayer said his insurance company is not honoring his claim so he took them to court. He is just waiting on a decision.

"Just working on it. Whatever they want to do. We can wait 'em out. They think they'll wait me out, but they better have brought their lunch cause it's going to take awhile," Cayer said.

Even though it cost him a pretty penny to rebuild, he didn't hesitate for a minute.

"You gotta do something. As soon as you stop and sit in a chair, pretty soon they'll start throwing dirt on ya. So just keep hammering at it," Cayer said.
