FLINT, MI (AP) -

An effort involving the beer industry in Michigan to provide extra nutrition support to help Flint families amid the city's crisis with lead-tainted water is kicking off this week.

"Labatt: Love Michigan" plans to help provide 77,000 healthy meals and nutrition education to Flint families over a 10-week period. In addition to Labatt USA, the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and several partner agencies are involved in the work.

Labatt says suppliers, wholesalers and retailers are pitching in on the Flint Families Summer Nutrition Program.

Nutritious food can limit the effects of lead exposure. If consumed, lead can cause developmental delays and learning disabilities. The state, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and other groups and agencies have been working to improve access to healthy food in Flint.
