Workers at the General Motors Flint assembly plant raised almost $20,000 for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

"Another display on how our community comes together for those in need," said William Kerr, with the food bank.

Kerr said he's impressed with the donation of $19,076 from the employees at the Flint truck assembly plant.

"There is a lot of hard working people in here with great jobs at this plant and they are willing to share that with people who need it," Kerr said.

The food bank said the money raised will go back into the community and provide over 100,000 meals.

Ray Theriault, assistant plant manager, said raising that amount of money in a matter of months was not an easy task, but everyone at the plant was happy to do it.

"This check is special because we raised nearly $20,000 and the food bank stretches that dollar for our neighbors in need. And as someone who has been in the community, seen the need, this is important to General Motors as a company and me as an individual to help those neighbors," Theriault said.

Rebecca Tody, GM employee, said when it's time to start giving back everyone at the plant chips in.

"We love donating. We love getting involved. So I think it's really great that we can raise so much money for the community and it's going back to resources right here," Tody said.

She said the money was raised through a summer fun basket raffle and they are already looking forward to next time.

Kerr said a little bit of help goes a long way at the food bank.

"With our leveraging ability of $1 equals six pounds or six meals, I would hope folks would look at us and say we are a great investment to our community. If you have the ability to donate, donate to the food bank and help those that are less fortunate," Kerr said.
