Police officers play basketball with kids

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

A video of local police officers playing basketball with kids is getting a lot of attention online.

The officers were in full uniform as they tried to reach out to the community they serve.

The two Flint police officers may have changed the way at least one neighborhood looks at them after stopping to play a game of basketball.

"They stopped and wanted us to play. Being assigned to the CAT Squad we tend to patrol the neighborhoods and look for any sort of crime and these kids just happened to look like they were having a good time and we thought we's get in and enjoy it with them on a nice day," Officer Randy Matteson said.

Matteson is one of the officers in the video. He joined Jace Walker and Chance Myott for a game of basketball on Vermilya Street in Flint.

"We just asked them if they wanted to play basketball and then they stopped and got out and were just playing with us," Myott said.

Rubie Williams is the person who recorded the video. She said she shot the video for a specific reason.

"Well, my husband came and told me the police were outside and you always think the worst at first, but then I saw what was going on. I just figured it would be some good PR," WIlliams said.

Williams hopes the moment of fun gives the neighborhood another way to see the police.

"Everybody came from all down the block, coming from both ways to watch and see what was going on. It was nice to see something good going on for a change," WIlliams said.
