River Roar festival underway in Bay City

Posted: Updated:

The annual River Roar festival kicked off in Bay City on Friday.

As popular as the event is, it almost didn't happen.

Organizers said they were close to being forced to silence all of the sounds that come with the big weekend. Last year's weather was bad and coming into this year the event lost title sponsors and faced increased costs.

In the final hour several companies came through to make sure the event would see its 29th year.

"I hope it never gets canceled because like I said, it bring a lot of money in," said Roger Zielinski, Bay City resident.

More than 4,400 people attend the event each year and the event is an economic driver for local businesses.

"It's something that we need to keep in the community," said Annie Murphy, Bay City resident.
