Community pulls together for annual River Roar

BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

The Bay City River Roar is a well-known annual event that may seem all fun and games, but the truth is after 28 years it almost didn't happen.

"It's just like it's the tradition, it's been here for a long time and people really enjoy coming out and watching the races and it's exciting,” said Rhonda Slayton with Do-All, Inc.

Chad Cunningham said he couldn't imagine not having the event.

"It's horrible to see that it wouldn't have happened,” he said.

If it wasn't for a huge effort from within the community, one of Bay City's largest event weekends wouldn't have been possible.

"Very excited that people in the community stepped up saying we don't want this to go and our major sponsors Meijer Associates and Fabiano Brothers and Soaring Eagle all kicked in more money and said don't let this thing leave,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham also gives thanks to event volunteers who spent the weekend working with this year's guests Need to Breathe and “Weird Al” Yancovic.

“We did have a large turnout, but we always do, it's amazing to me how many people in the community step up,” Cunningham said.

Another successful year of River Roar is in the books and community members are hopeful for its continuance.

"I was glad it happened, we're hoping it will happen next year,” Slayton said.
