JACKSON, MI (AP) -

Consumers Energy has developed two new mobile command centers to help the utility respond to local emergencies and support widespread power restoration after storms.

Annette Gardiner, vice president of shared services for the unit of Jackson-based CMS Energy Corp., says in a statement that the specially equipped vehicles are "conference rooms on wheels, where leaders can be with crews in the field" to improve emergency response.

Consumers Energy says Monday that the 30-foot mobile command centers will be ready to be deployed wherever they are needed.

Each command center is equipped with backup satellite internet access and radio equipment to keep communication channels available. There are work stations, equipment to print large maps and blueprints, a conference table and a large exterior TV screen.
