SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A man went before a judge Wednesday in connection with the death of his girlfriend and 4-month-old daughter.

Rodolfo Michael Sanchez, 34, was arraigned on two counts of OWI causing death and one count of OWI causing serious injury. Sanchez pleaded not guilty.

The accident happened at the corner of Michigan and Tulane in Carrollton Township. Police said Sanchez was driving a car that suddenly went off the road, striking a tree.

Lindsey Drake, 30, and her 4-month-old daughter Amiliana Sanchez died in the crash. Sanchez's sister, 18-year-old Nikki Cortez, was also seriously injured.

A memorial now sits at the tree where the mother and her infant daughter were killed.

Sanchez's defense attorney Matthew Frey said they are still waiting for toxicology results and other details.

"In a case like this, of course you can't contest that people died. It's a question of the circumstance in which they died," Frey said.

Lindsey Drake's father said he never got the chance to meet his newest grandchild. He didn't want to be identified, but said his daughter loved all four of her children and he never guessed he would be planning her funeral.

Sanchez, who is also Amiliana's father, was the person behind the wheel.

"Loved ones are suffering because of him drinking and drugging," Drake's father said.

The Saginaw County prosecutor said Sanchez was under the influence at the time of the accident.

Drake's father said the tragedy could have been avoided if he never got behind the wheel.

"In my eyes he is a cold-blooded, premeditated, calculated murderer by using the weapon of vehicular manslaughter," Drake's father said.

Drake's father said he knows the suspect's day in court will come, but for now he wants everyone to know the anguish caused by one bad decision.

"If you are drinking, drugging, and or drinking and drugging, please do not get behind the wheel of an automobile. You're putting your life in danger, as well as others," he said.
