4 candidates run for Saginaw County sheriff

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Four people are battling for the sheriff's job in Saginaw County.

The incumbent and his three challengers spoke to TV5 about what they bring to the table.

Bill Gutzwiller, Brian Booker and Robert Karl are trying to prove they are better than incumbent Sheriff Bill Federspiel.

"Well, the first thing I would do is I would solidify the morale and have a vision for the agency. Right now the officers have no idea what direction the agency is going in. They are concerned about their jobs every day when they go in," Gutzwiller said.

Karl said he would be fiscally responsible, something he said Federspiel is not.

"If someone said changing over the cars over to black and white with the red and blue bubbles on it was not fiscally responsible, it wasn't taxpayer money. They don't know what they are talking about because that money that was used was drug forfeiture money. Every last penny of it," Federspiel said.

Federspiel is the county's two-term sheriff. He has held the office for eight years.

"There are a lot of issues confronting Saginaw County. In the last eight years we've accomplished a lot of the goals we've set. A lot of goals I've personally set, reducing violent crime throughout the county was a major goal and we've done a good job," Federspiel said.

Booker said what he brings to the future of law enforcement is his past.

"I would like to stress exactly what I've done in my leadership role in the Buena Vista Police Department and in the city of Saginaw Police Department," Booker said.

He said his record is unmatched by his opponents.

"I feel I am the only viable candidate that provides the leadership skills that the other three didn't have when they ran for sheriff. I was already a police chief in an active department," Booker said.

Booker served as the Buena Vista police chief from 2005 to 2012.
