DETROIT (AP) -

The owner of four pit bulls that mauled a 4-year-old Detroit boy to death has been sentenced to a year in jail with work release and probation.

Geneke Lyons apologized Thursday to Xavier Strickland's mother in Wayne County Circuit Court before learning his punishment. Lyons was earlier found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Judge James Callahan sentenced Lyons to five years of probation, with the first behind bars with work release.

Xavier was walking with his mother in December when they were attacked by the dogs. Police had to shoot the animals to free the boy's body.

Lyons wasn't home at the time, but prosecutors said he should be held responsible because the dogs weren't under control. Evidence included security video of the fatal mauling, which left some jurors in tears.
