FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

It’s about to get easier to fly to New York from Flint.

Thursday, Bishop International Airport celebrated the addition of non-stop flights to the Newark Airport.

The first arrival of the United Airlines flight is not until Friday, but the airport is celebrating early, because of the holiday weekend.

"This is great. It's great for the community and it's great for the airport," said Craig Williams, airport director.

Cheryl Cannon, sales manager for United Airlines, said the new route offers customers non-stop access to many other places.

"We are so excited. This has been in the works for a very long time now. So anytime we are able to add new service, in or out of any airport, we are ecstatic," Cannon said.

Cannon said the airline will offer opportunities to connect to 79 domestic flights and 56 flights to other countries. United Airlines will have one flight per day from both airports.

Williams said if it's a success you could see even more flights to the city that never sleeps.

"This has the opportunity to grow. We are starting at the ground floor and if the community and region supports it, this is going to grow," Williams said.
