A Mid-Michigan physical therapist who is running for State Representative has been arrested and charged with health care fraud.

Vijay Kumar, whose last known address was in West Branch, was taken into custody following an investigation by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General, The Michigan Attorney General’s Office and others.

He went before a judge Thursday, June 30, on three different charges, including Health Care Fraud, Medicaid Fraud and four counts of Intentionally Placing False Information on a Chart by a Health Care Provider.

The Ogemaw County Prosecuting Attorney’s office reports that Kumar owns and operates five physical therapy businesses. They include Adapt Physical Therapy in West Branch, Adapt Physical Therapy in Prescott, Agility Physical Therapy in Rose City, Agility Physical Therapy in Hale and Agility Physical Therapy in St. Helen.

He is also attempting to be elected to the 103rd District. On his website, votevijay.com, he writes:

“I am running for State Representative because I care about this community and its future. My wife and I raised three children here and we hope they can have the life we have. If elected I will donate every dollar in legislative salary back to the community because I feel we need to invest in our future here. In Lansing I will work every day to bring jobs to the district, I will work to protect our Northern Michigan Values, and will be returning the power to the people of this community and making sure we have the representation we need and deserve.”

Last year Kumar was being investigated for accusations of sex crimes and fraud. Click here to read our coverage from July, 2015. According to Ogemaw County Prosecutor LaDonna Schultz, all charges filed last year are still in effect.

For the criminal sexual conduct charges Kumar has a jury trial set for August 29.

Schultz  tells TV5 that regarding Kumar's medical license, he still has it and is still practicing and operating his offices. The complaint filed by the Attorney General's Office is still pending and has not been heard by the board that licenses physical therapists.
