BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A registered sex offender has been arraigned in connection to a flashing incident at a Mid-Michigan Walmart.

Joel Zahnow, 41, allegedly exposed himself to two young girls at the Walmart in Bay County's Bangor Township on June 30.

Zahnow is a registered sex offender in Wisconsin. He was charged with child pornography in 2007 and must register as a sex offender until 2032.

His current residence is listed in Bay City.

Zahnow was nine years into a 10 year probation sentence for the child pornography charge at the time of the Walmart incident.

Police said the two girls were 7-years-old.

Zahnow was arraigned on one count of aggravated indecent exposure. His bond was set to $100,000.

If he is found guilty he could face two years behind bars and a $2,000 fine.

"Obviously it's a real serious crime and preying on children is real serious and put on the forefront, it's good to see someone actually caught and taken off the streets," Bay County Undersheriff Troy Cunningham said.

Zahnow moved to Bay City in 2009.

"He had a girlfriend in Wisconsin who he later married. Her family and stuff were here so through the ICOT system he applies to come to Bay County and the circuit court probation does an investigation into all his stuff and does home visits and all that," Cunningham said.

Federal law says both states must sign off on the move when a sex offender changes states, something the state of Michigan did with Zahnow. As a resident of Bay County he also had to re-register as a sex offender.

"That's in the national registry and they said since he's been in Bay County he's been compliant," Cunningham said.
