Volunteers begin neighborhood watch

THOMAS TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Final preps are in place for a group of volunteers who will be patrolling their community.

Members of the Swan Valley Neighborhood Watch Patrol received signs and lights for their vehicles so people can easily identify them.

"We're not here to do vigilante justice. We're here to just observe. We're going to use our eyes, our ears, and our cellphones to support law enforcement,” said Tami Benner, a neighborhood watch patrol

The patrols may have an effect that goes beyond deterring crime.

“It helps people become invested in the community so we’re not just kind of sitting around saying ‘Gosh, I wish they would do something,” Benner said.

Patrols begin Friday in Saginaw County’s Thomas Township.
