Flag-lowering occasions in Michigan in 2015

LANSING, MI (AP) -

On nearly 90 percent of days last year, one or more states were flying the American flag at half-staff to memorialize the deaths of military members, public officials, police, first responders, prominent citizens, and victims of mass killings and disasters, The Associated Press found in analyzing information requested from all 50 states and the federal government.

   There were 21 instances of Michigan ordering the flag flown at half-staff last year on at least some government property:

   -- Jan. 14: Former state Rep. Michael Murphy

   -- Jan. 23: Former state Sen. Harry DeMaso

   -- March 30: Marine Staff Sgts. Marcus Bawol, Trevor Blaylock and Andrew Seif, killed in helicopter crash during training

   -- April 3: Former state Rep. Jim Plakas

   -- April 21: Former U.S. Sen. Robert Griffin

   -- April 17: Former state Rep. Neal Nitz

   -- May 8: Navy SEAL Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Brett Allen Marihugh, drowned during training

   -- July 9: Senior Chief Petty Officer Jason May, died of non-combat causes during deployment in Middle East

   -- Aug. 3: Former state Sen. Harry Gast

   -- Sept. 1: State Trooper Chad H. Wolf, hit by a driver while on duty

   -- Sept. 3: Former state Rep. Mary Lou Parks

   -- Sept. 8: Former state Rep. Vera Rison

   -- Sept. 14: Former state Sen. Henry Stallings

   -- Sept. 16: Lansing firefighter Dennis E. Rodeman, hit by a pickup while collecting donations for charity

   -- Oct. 1: Casnovia Township firefighter Richard Crosby Sr., had heart attack after returning home from medical call

   -- Oct. 22: Department of Natural Resources conservation officer 1st Lt. Arthur Green III, died in plane crash while heading to a meeting

   -- Oct. 26: Air Force Master Sgt. Gregory Kuhse, died in helicopter crash Afghanistan

   -- Nov. 5: Former Senate Majority Leader Robert VanderLaan

   -- Nov. 30: Detroit firefighter Sgt. Vince Smith, found unresponsive at a fire station

   -- Dec. 8: Detroit Fire Capt. Walter Szelag, died of apparent heart attack while on duty

   -- Dec. 28: Former state Rep. Daisy Elliott
