Fights prompt beach closure ahead of fireworks display

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (AP) -

Police and some people who gathered to enjoy a southwestern Michigan fireworks display were pelted with bottles as officers were forced to close a beach along Lake Michigan.

South Haven police say Monday in a release that a large group of individuals became violent Sunday evening prior to the start of the Light up the Lakes Fireworks display.

State troopers, Van Buren sheriff's deputies and Pokagon Tribal officers responded to a request for assistance.

South Haven police say several officers were hit by bottles, but none sought medical treatment. Several bystanders also were hit and needed medical care.

Police tell WZZM-TV that fights broke out on North Beach and that multiple arrests were made.

The fireworks show still was held. South Haven is southwest of Grand Rapids.
