FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

It could be a big step forward, a new lease on life for an historic theatre in Flint.

The Whiting, a member organization of the Flint Cultural Center, and Uptown Reinvestment Corporation (URC), a 501c3 not-for profit organization, are pleased to announce that the acquisition of  the Capitol Theatre building is complete, clearing the path for renovation work to begin on the historic structure.

“We are thrilled to be at this point and to begin field work on the restoration of this iconic arts and entertainment venue in Flint.  More exciting still are the opportunities a reactivated, modernized Capitol Theatre will create for our entire community,” noted Whiting Executive Director Jarret M. Haynes.

“The unique and complementary partnership between URC and the Flint Cultural Center, through The Whiting, demonstrates the broad support and commitment for this project, and bodes well for its ultimate and long term success, both artistically and in terms of economic benefits for Flint and the entire region,” stated Tim Herman, President of URC.

Under the partnership, URC will lead the redevelopment work at the venue, while The Whiting will serve as the venue’s operator and presenter.

The project, which will undertake a complete modernization of the entire building, including state-of-the-art theatrical and production equipment, will also restore the historically significant elements of the facility.  Overall, the renovation work is expected to run approximately 14-16 months, with an expected reopening of the theatre in the Fall of 2017.

A community event to unveil the design concepts and tour the facility in its current condition is being planned for later in July, with more details to be announced.
