Some skeptical of lottery money used for schools

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The Mega Millions winner won't be the only one benefiting from the big jackpot, Michigan's school system will too.

The lottery is known for making winners millionaires, but there is also a highly publicized function of the lottery earnings - funding schools.

For some, they don't understand how that actually happens, especially with so many schools seemingly underfunded.

According to Michigan.gov, in 2015 the Michigan Lottery contributed nearly $800 million to Michigan schools. According to the state's lottery website, more than 97 cents on the dollar are allocated towards school funding.

Amanda Chavez said the numbers don't seem to add up. She pointed to the numbers of schools closing in the Saginaw area.

Chavez said it seems the odds that money is being spent on schools seems as unlikely as winning the lottery.

State lottery officials said in the past, independent audits are done every year to make sure the money is spent on schools.
