A group of firefighters saved a local family from a potential tragedy.

The family of four was fast asleep in their Saginaw home when smoke and flames were seen coming from their roof. First responders had to force their way inside to wake the family before the flames spread to the rest of the home.

"We're going to have to take it one day at a time. I don't know what we're going to do next, but we're just gonna try to pick up the pieces," said Shawn Clack, homeowner.

Clack, his wife and their two daughters escaped a fire at their home on Cherry Street in Saginaw early Tuesday morning.

"I looked out my window [and] there was like four or five firetrucks out here saying 'you need to go. You need to go now.' So me and my family had to get up out of our bed at 2 in the morning and had to run out of the house with barely anything, but what we had on our backs," Clack said.

Captain Scott Yaw, with the Saginaw Fire Department, was among the first crew to arrive at the home.

"Whoever called and noticed the house was on fire gave us enough time to get in, break the door down and get them out on time," Yaw said.

Firefighters said the house had working smoke detectors, but they think they didn't go off because most of the fire and smoke was contained to the attic and the roof.

"It all rises. So when it's already above the smoke detector there's a hole in the roof, so all the smokes leaving the house. It's not going to set the smoke detector off in the attic," Yaw said.

Yaw said the fire could have been started by embers from fireworks, but the exact cause is under investigation.

Meanwhile, Clack said his family is extremely grateful for the firefighters who helped save their lives.

"We really thank God for them and we know that without them that it might not have ended so well if they didn't come through the door like they did," Clack said.
