A Mt. Pleasant man's attempt to steal a woman's debit card earned him nearly six years behind bars.

In April, Devin James Pope Sr. pleaded guilty to trying to take the victim's debit card from her purse on March 25, 2016.

When the woman resisted, Pope grabbed the woman's fingers attempting to pry them off the purse. In the process, he broke one of the woman's fingers, according to the United States Attorney's Office.

The assault happened on the Isabella Indian reservation.

Pope, who is 31 years old, was sentenced to 55 months in prison for assault causing serious bodily injury.

This case was investigated by the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's office.
