Dow layoffs to take place over 2 years

MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

Dow Chemical plans to eliminate 2,500 employees globally as part of a deal to take full control of Dow Corning.

The positions will be eliminated during a two-year period from June 1, 2016 through June 1, 2018, according to Dow.

The employees that will lose their job will be notified by the end of the third quarter for this year, Dow said.

"It's very difficult for everybody," said John Mendyk, chapter president of United Steel Workers Union. The union represents the workers at Dow.

Last month Dow announced it is cutting nearly 700 jobs in the Mid-Michigan area. Many of those positions are expected to be salary workers.

Mendyk said many hourly positions could also be on the chopping block.

"We're expected to lose up to 15 percent of our workforce, which could mean 100 workers," he said.

He said dozens of his union members are close to retirement and he's hoping the company will agree to buyouts.

"Salary or hourly, nobody likes to see anybody lose their job. It's pretty hard on all of us," he said.
