BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Unexpected and costly fees threaten to cut short the Tall Ships Challenge for the Viking long boat Draken Harald Harfagre.

Officials with the Viking sailing vessel said they found out recently they would be required to pay pilot fees for traveling through the Great Lakes.

They said the cost for pilotage, if the ship were to complete the Tall Ships Challenge through the Great Lakes, is well over $400,000.

On Tuesday the crew committed to coming to the Tall Ship Festival in Bay City this weekend, but said they would not be able to finish the Challenge.

Event organizers announced a plan to help raise money to help pay the pilotage fees.

Here is part of their statement:

In an effort to support Draken and the Spanish vessel El Galeon Andalucia that is also subject to the same pilotage fees, Tall Ship Celebration has announced its “Rock the Dock” event will now be a fundraiser for these two ships.

Rock the Dock is Saturday, July 16 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. It will be held in Downtown Bay City’s Wenonah Park.

Only 200 tickets will be sold and they are  $50 each.
