JACKSON, MI (AP) -

A woman and her 2-year-old son were rescued in southern Michigan after being trapped for about an hour after lightning struck a tree, causing it to fall on their car.

The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports they were driving Tuesday evening in Jackson when the tree fell as severe thunderstorms moved through the area. Rescue crews cut the roof off the car and used a chainsaw to remove the tree.

People at the scene applauded when they were out. The newspaper says they appeared to be OK.

Storms hit the state Tuesday, causing roadway flooding and leaving several thousand homes and businesses without power in Jackson County.

Authorities say a tornado earlier struck Michigan's western Upper Peninsula during a storm that downed trees and caused power outages and flooding.
