LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

A new law allows victims of domestic violence to separate from cell phone contracts they share with an abuser.

Governor Rick Snyder signed the legislation on Wednesday, June 14.

The law allows victims who receive an order from a judge to legally separate from a shared cell phone plan with their abuser.

“This law empowers victims of domestic violence by lifting hurdles that would otherwise make it more difficult to escape these volatile and dangerous situation,” said Debi Cain, Executive Director of the Michigan Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board.
