11-year-old celebrates birthday with new bike

Posted: Updated:

A Mid-Michigan sixth grader is celebrating her birthday with a new bike thanks to her kindness towards others.

Mitaya Collin, 11, is a student at Mary McGuire Elementary in Mt. Pleasant. On Thursday, Collin was chosen as the fifth winner in Barberi Law’s Bikes for Kids program.

Her grandma, Connie Napier, nominated her.

“Taya has always been the first one in school to help out new children, or children in need,” Napier wrote. “Even though she tragically lost her father in September 2015, Taya has never felt sorry for herself, and has the kindest soul ever. She donated her toys to Central Michigan Mental Health, so the children visiting there would have something to take their minds off bad things …”

Collin enjoys helping others whenever she can.

“I just like seeing them happy,” she said. “I feel like it’s the right thing to do.”

This was a bittersweet day for Collin, her first birthday without her dad.  But the girl’s mother and grandmother said Collin is always taking care of her brother and sister and is very sympathetic to others.

“Even though she lost her daddy, she recently hugged me at my father’s funeral, and said, ‘You’re OK Grandma, it’ll be all right,’” Napier said in her nomination.

Collin said she thinks other kids will be inspired to be kind when they read about other kids, like her, being recognized for the good things they do.

Barberi Law will give away five more mountain bikes this summer through the middle of August.

Nominations of 150 words or less can be submitted online HERE.

Or, a form can be picked up at the Barberi Law office and emailed to rgould@barberilawfirm.com.

There are no specific criteria for the nominations, other than recognizing a child who has done something kind for others or that has positively impacted his/her friends, community, school or family.
