Moving Wall makes stop in Sanford

SANFORD, MI (WNEM) -

There's still a couple of days left to experience a traveling monument dedicated to the thousands of service members killed during the Vietnam War.

The Moving Wall is helping young people connect to that part of their nation's history and helping others remember loved ones they lost so long ago.

"It's a combination of like talking to an old friend and bringing tears to my eyes," Philip Tennant said.

Tennant stopped by the wall in Sanford to pay his respects to someone he lost in the conflict.

"He was a good buddy. I lost a good friend," Tennant said.

Jan Lander visited the wall to give her granddaughters a history lesson.

"I'm glad to see that we are finally giving them their due and honor for the sacrifices they made. If we don't pass it on to them how will they know," Lander said.

Amelia Linder said she has a better understanding of the cost of war.

"The story of my grandfather the night he switched posts with another man and that man lost his life. That could've been my grandfather that night," Linder said.

Meanwhile, the organizers who helped bring the memorial to Mid-Michigan are glad so many people are coming out to see it.

"I'm so grateful that we've been able to host this event, but I'm gratified with the turnout," said Mark Authier, commander of the Sanford American Legion.

The post is the only Mid-Michigan stop for the traveling monument.

"Educate the public and give them the opportunity to see those 58,000 names on the wall in cases where they may never get a chance to travel to Washington and do so," Authier said.

As for Tennant, he appreciates the chance to be there and honor the memory of his friend.

"Thank you very much. It's a terrific job. Thank you very much," he said.
