SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Nexteer teamed up with United Way for its first ever Global Service Day.

"We had an excellent turnout. Everyone is really excited to be working at this park," said Myiesha Smith, with Nexteer.

Her crew at Nexteer rolled up their sleeves to make the community a better place to live and play.

"Landscaping the park as well as restoring playground equipment with a fresh coat of paint and putting down mulch for the children," Smith said.

On Friday they got to work at St. Vincent's Park in Saginaw. From painting the old playground to weeding out a sandbox, workers had their hands full.

"It's gorgeous. I can't believe the changes that are being seen already," said Melissa Durow, with United Way.

The group collected several dozen lawn and trash bags and they are fixing up the two empty lots next to the park.

The cleanup hit close to home for Mark Swegiart who grew up by the park. Now he works at Nexteer and said this is a new beginning for the kids that play there.

"We want them to have a safe place to play. Something they can enjoy and something that's good to look at at the same time," Sweigart said.

Smith said Nexteer is planning to make it an annual initiative and are looking to expand its outreach program.

"I hope this inspires other businesses to do this and maybe even have a global service week," she said.
