A massive blaze erupted Tuesday morning as a man and his nieces and nephews were sitting upstairs, but after some quick thinking they made it out safely.

It all happened at a home on Bullock Street on Saginaw's west side.

“At first it was like a panic but then I realized it wasn't a time for me to panic,” Demarquise Abraham said.

Staying cool in the heat of the moment, that's what Abraham had to do this morning.

Fire was ripping through his home when the 20-year-old grabbed his five nieces and nephews and escaped through an upstairs window.

“I was trying to map out ways that we could get down in my head but I didn't want them to see that I was nervous or anything like that,” Abraham said.

Making matters worse, Abraham's phone was inside. He could only hope help was on the way as he stood with the five children on the roof of the home as it continued to burn.

“there was six people on the roof and they were screaming for help,” neighbor Olivia Gonzalez described.

Gonzalez said it was tense moments for the neighborhood.

“I was worried about the kids and it was just scary. Their whole backyard was on fire,” she said.

Then fire crews showed up.

One by one first responders got everyone off the roof and into an ambulance.

“To get in the ambulance with them and just see them smiling and talking to me all the way to the hospital it was just a wonderful thing,” said family friend, Deshondus Tatum.

Tatum said spirits were high as she realized everybody would be alright but the children's grandmother Tish Demery didn't know that when she got the call from her daughter.

“’Mom's house is on fire. The kids are in the hospital.’ So, I just fell to the floor and I was crying because I didn't know what was going on. I didn't know if they were OK,” Demery said.

Though, it wasn't long until she learned about Abraham's quick actions.

"I'm truly blessed that my son was able to get all five of my grandbabies out of that house with no problems, no scars, no burns, nothing. He's my hero,” Demery said.

As for Abraham, he doesn't want to be called a hero. He insists that anyone would do the same thing he did. He’s just grateful everyone survived the fire.

“It's a blessing. It just goes to show you that god is always working. And he never gives you too much that you can't handle,” Abraham said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The family says the house is gutted and they lost everything.

They also say they have no home insurance.
