Forum held for local candidates running for primaries

Posted: Updated:
BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Bay City’s State Theater hosted a forum for local candidates Monday night to get to know some of the candidates running for primaries next month.

Voters in Bay County gathered to hear what candidates for executive, sheriff and prosecutor had to say.

County Executive

After the forum, TV5 spoke to the candidates for county executive.

“I think we've got a good plan to not only manage the county in an effective and efficient manner, but also a strategy that will help produce job creation and job retention going through the next decade,” Candidate Tom Hickner said.

“I'm an anti-establishment candidate, I'm coming in from the outside, some that will be independent of the political process,” Candidate Mark McFarlin.

A third candidate for county executive, Jim Barcia, was not in attendance.

Bay County Sheriff

Democrats Robert Lee and Terry Spencer, along with Republican Jason Holsapple, also talked about why they should be Bay County Sheriff.

“In 2009, I received the outstanding achievement award for the state of Michigan for the job that I did,” Lee said.

“I’ve worked there, I’ve seen what goes on, what doesn’t go on and I feel some changes need to be made,” Holsapple said.

“We need to have a visible sheriff in the community and we also need to reconnect with the community,” Spencer said.

Democrat Troy Cunningham and write-in candidate Kenneth Zolnierek did not attend the forum.
