During election season, political games are expected, and in Genesee County, some officials are accusing each other of playing dirty.

"They have their own agendas, so you always have to look at it not as factual, but pushing their agendas,” said Jill Maxwell, who is fed up with the politics.

County Clerk John Gleason filed a lawsuit against the county board saying they’ve misused money from the county’s technology fund, something Board Chairman Jamie Curtis vehemently denies.

"He comes in here waving a banner that everybody's a crook and he's here saving the world, and that's the farthest from the truth,” Curtis said.

Curtis said the board has followed county protocol that's been in place for years in dealing with the technology funds - money that is specifically set aside to upgrade computers and other technology throughout the county.

Gleason, however, claimed millions of dollars are missing and he puts that at the hands of county commissioners.

"Every single person who's had a death in their family, who's had their will, their estates altered, who comes down here and buys a land document, they put $5 into the technology fund, and it's all gone,” Gleason said.

Gleason said he believes the money from the fund was put into the general fund and that money helped the county boost its bottom line. He claimed it also triggered $500 bonuses for union employees, done as a political move just weeks from August's primary election.

"This was used as a slush fund three weeks to the day before an election,” Gleason said.

Curtis said that's not true and the fund balance is where it is today because of wise spending.

"We're doing the work people put us here to do and we're doing it very well,” Curtis said.
