ANN ARBOR, MI (WNEM) -

A new study said couples who drink together stay together.

The study was published in the Journals of Gerontology.

The study looked at the drinking patterns of married couples associated with their marital quality.

"Wives who reported drinking alcohol reported decreased negative marital quality over time when husbands also reported drinking and increased negative marital quality over time when husbands reported not drinking," the study said.

The study focused on more than 4,800 married couples and their average amount of alcohol consumption per week. The researchers compared that to the negative marital quality they received.

Researchers defined the negative marital quality as criticism and demands.

The study said the importance of the results is the drinking status, not the amount of alcohol consumes.
