CLARE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Many of us see vehicles with kayaks and canoes strapped to the roof almost every weekend during the summer in Mid-Michigan, but are they being strapped down properly?

Glenn Isenhart is a professional when it comes to making sure your kayak is mounted securely for travel.

After a vehicle lost two kayaks going sound bound Sunday on US-127, causing a massive accident, Isenhart has this advice for those that love the great outdoors with their kayaks.

“Double check it. A lot of times they don't have the proper equipment. Sometimes you can fit some foam pieces on there that you get from anywhere,” Isenhart said.

Although his trailer can hold up to nine kayaks, Isenhart highly recommends that you only travel with a SUV or vehicle that has racks.

“You have to have a car like this, with racks, they support what you need. You have to mount it properly with certified straps that can hold it down,” Isenhart said.

Eric Rathburn loves kayaking, however, when it comes making sure his kayak is secure he isn't afraid to ask those who know the business to reinforce the safety rules.

“It's always good to ask the professionals no matter how long you have been doing a sport or anything, they are the experts. It's always good to know that there is someone there that may know something different you can learn from for safety sake,” Rathburn said.

One of the vehicles involved in the accident on US-127 in Clare County rolled several times trying to avoid the loose kayak. Thankfully, there were only minor injuries.
