Saginaw boat tour offers staycation adventure

SHIAWASSEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

It’s a staycation adventure right in our own backyard.

Saginaw-native Wil Hufton has owned and operated Johnny Panther Quests Adventure Trips for 22 years. He takes visitors aboard one of his scenic boat tours through the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge. The journey begins right in Saginaw.

“What I do is I give them a seat of the pants ecology, history, and wildlife. Just about anything you want to know about this area we've seen it,” Hufton said.

Hufton calls this his Everglades of Michigan.

You don't have to worry about any alligators but you will see plenty of other types of wildlife.

"There's tons of bald eagles, it's the largest habitat for bald eagles in the state. We see muskrat, beaver, deer, Great Blue Herons, American White Pelicans - just about anything you can imagine in a wetland in Michigan we've seen. We've even seen a couple of cougars out here," Hufton said.

Rated a "gem attraction" of Michigan by AAA, Hufton runs tours throughout the year, including in the fall and winter.

Trips are by reservation and usually last a few hours.

“Worst part of the trip for me is having to come back. Once we get out into the swamp I don't want to come back,” Hufton said.
