BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

A 5-year-old Mid-Michigan boy, with the help of his friends, passed out water and snacks to local police Friday, hoping it helped them stay a little cooler, too.

The water is nice in hot weather, but for the kids, it’s a great chance for them to meet officers and interact with those that protect them in the community.

“Puts them on a one-on-one level with them. Makes them seem more like a dad or brother or uncle, mom or sister, instead of a big scary police officer. A human level, like a friend,” Mandy Caplis with Kids for Cops said.

Caplis and her son do this type of event often. They call it Kids for Cops.

Chase Girar and his family asked her to bring the event to Bay City, so he can meet the police.

It’s something the officers really appreciated.

“You know, water, chips on a hot day? It's needed,” Officer Brandon Murphy said.

Officer Murphy said he loves seeing the kids explore the police vehicles and be interested in what they do.

“Anytime a child is curious and wants to learn something new, I think that's really good,” Murphy said.
