SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A sad update to the case of a missing sailor.

The mother of Nickolas Atkinson posted on Facebook Tuesday morning that her son was found dead.

After a long hard search for my sweet scared son Nickolas Atkinson we found him today. He is now with our lord. I wish i could say more but im just lost for words. I love you nick and you will always be in my heart forever. Until we see each other again i love you my sweet son.

Friends and family had not heard from Atkinson since July 19 when he posted a cryptic message on his Facebook page saying, ‘Goodbye. I can’t do this anymore.’

Atkinson’s mother, Heather Watts, told TV5 her son joined the Navy to help protect the country he loved. He attended Carman-Ainsworth before transferring to a school on the west side of the state.

He was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the death of the sailor.

Our sister station at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia reported a ‘suspicious death’ late Monday night. Police told WTKR a man’s body was found dead inside a car near a Norfolk shopping center.

Norfolk authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the man.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service classified Atkinson as an unauthorized absence and were looking into his case. However, they said foul play was not suspected.

TV5 has reached out to NCIS investigators to confirm the death. Stay with us as we gather more information on this developing story.
