FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

The city of Flint will soon be moving forward with the council’s garbage collection recommendation.

Monday night, the city council denied Mayor Karen Weaver’s veto. The council approved hiring Republic to handle waste, but Weaver’s office claimed her choice for the job was cheaper.

Weaver vetoed the council choice but the decision was overridden.

“A lot of our guys are from Flint, their families are from Flint, we've been picking up the trash for the last three or four years. These guys do a great job, and I'd like to see it kept here – local,” said Mike Gonzalez, who works for Republic.

Councilman Scott Kinkaid said the company Weaver wanted was based in Detroit, non-union and had ties to former Mayor Woodrow Stanley.
