ANN ARBOR, MI (WNEM) -

Parents, lock up your pain drugs.

A new study at the University of Michigan shows teens who misuse opioid drugs are more likely to abuse drugs by age 35.

Researchers said 53 percent of teens who misuse the pain relief drugs had two or more substance abuse symptoms in adulthood.

The data came from a national study that tracks alcohol and other drug use among more than 4,000 high school seniors until adulthood.

A third of teens said they used leftover opioid medication from a previous prescription, according to the report.

Meanwhile, appropriate use of the drugs does not increase the risk of substance abuse in adulthood.

Researchers said parents need to be diligent about properly disposing of leftover prescription drugs.
