SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

An old building is going down to make way for a new one.

It's a project that is making progress in reshaping downtown Saginaw.

"I'm so excited. When I saw it coming down yesterday, I went back to the market and told all my vendors and everybody just whooted big time because it's finally happening," said Shelly McGeathy, executive director of the Downtown Saginaw Farmer's Market.

The new market will go at the site of the old Firestone building.

Gretchen Augustine lives in the Bancroft apartment building, which overlooks the new farmer's market site. She said she has an appreciation for old buildings like the one that was torn down, but said the revitalization of downtown makes the demolition worth it.

"We love old buildings so it's sort of sad to see it go. But on the other hand, it's good for the change and building up of the new downtown," Augustine said.

Her husband Gabe said he watched the building come down and is glad that not only will fresh food be closer to home, but with the old building out of the way they have a better view of the riverfront.

"I'm happy because our apartment overlooks the river. So now we kinda have like a new river view," he said.

The Augustines said the new farmer's market brings nothing but added value to their downtown neighborhood, adding life to an area they see only getting better.

"We're used to living in sort of downtown settings. So I just like the idea of a downtown that's coming back to life," Gretchen Augustine said.
