Police name 17-year-old killed in shooting

BUENA VISTA, MI (WNEM) -

A teen is dead after an overnight shooting in Buena Vista. 

Officers were called to the 400 block of S. 23rd Street about 10:35 p.m. Tuesday, July 26 for reports of a male down in the roadway.  

When they arrived, they found 17-year-old Joshua Javen Phillips of Buena Vista had been shot. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Buena Vista Police Department said they are actively investigating the deadly shooting. Michigan State Police are assisting the investigation.

"I've been living over here for about 30 years in this neighborhood and I ain't never seen nothing go over so," Rodney Johnson said.

He said the violence has him on edge.

"Well, it got me kind of scared now because I'm always out working on lawn mowers in the yard. Now it's got me like I got to be watching my back or turning around and see is anybody going to be messing with me," Johnson said.
