GRAND BLANC, MI (WNEM) -

Family, friends and even complete strangers came together in memory of two woman struck down in the prime of their lives.

"They were just two innocent people doing their jobs. Didn't deserve it, didn't know it was coming, no one could have predicted this.”

Kyle Kindt never imagined that when his girlfriend, Lyric Work, left home Tuesday morning that their lives would be forever changed.

Work, who was eight months pregnant, and her co-worker Tamara Johnson were critically injured when a woman opened fire in the leasing office at Grand Oak Apartments in Grand Blanc.

Johnson died a short time later at the hospital.

Work was put on life support as doctors at Hurley Medical Center performed an emergency c-section and delivered a little baby girl.

"I hope no one ever has to be in my shoes, or even imagine what it's like, because the thoughts I'm thinking right now are unbearable,” Kindt said.

Kindt said he and Lyric were high school sweethearts, falling in love at Grand Blanc High School and graduating in 2014.

Their first child was due on September 16. They knew it was a girl and named her Marley.

The baby was born at 4 pounds and 11 ounces. She is in the NICU recovering.

"What keeps me stable and keeps me strong is Marley, and I'm going to stay strong for her, and be the best dad I can be for her,” Kindt said.

Kindt said with his baby girl, he’ll have a constant reminder of the woman he fell in love with.

"I have a part of her, forever, that I can carry on. And make the best of, and that's what I plan on doing,” he said.

Work is still on life support, but family say she has no brain activity. They hope to fulfill her wish of being an organ donor.

GoFundMe accounts have been set up to help pay for medical bills for both Tamara Johnson and Lyric Work
