LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

The fight against human trafficking takes center stage in Lansing.

The Michigan Human Trafficking Commission met Wednesday to discuss preventative measures.

Commission Member and Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the state has no problem prosecuting offenders.

“In other words, we are trying to get to the source and say to somebody who wants to engage a person in human trafficking that you're the one that's going to end up in prison for your activities,” Leyton said.

The meeting focused on tribal efforts to curb trafficking.

Experts said native women and children are at higher risk of becoming victims than any other racial or ethnic group.
