BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

A new facility will open for the terminally ill, allowing them to rest in comfort during their final days.

The facility will be named after a place that served patients for 15 years.

Workers are in the final stage of finishing the new Brian's House Hospice Facility in Bay County. They started retrofitting the former church last spring and soon it will serve six residents.

The project has been three years in the making, ever since the former Brian's House was closed on the west side of Bay City.

"It's a hospice house, but they die in dignity. They die with their family around them and all of Brian's House supports the whole family," said Delilah Maxwell, with Brian's House.

The folks who made sure the facility was built also wanted something unique about it. It has to do with 24 hour operation.

"This place is one of the only facilities that will have 24 hours a day nursing care. Some of the other end of life places do not have that. Hospice will be providing pain management, just like Brian's House was," said Dwight McCulloch, with Brian's House.

The cost of the project is nearly $1 million. The treasurer, George Walker, said donors have done a great job helping keep up with the costs, but the project is still short $300,000.

"This project, by the time it's done is going to be over $950,000. And by the time that we do all the compliance with the state, that's been expensive, but we've had things pop up all the way along that weren't planned that they just happen and so costs have gone over what we anticipated. But we're plugging away. We're sticking to it. We're going to do it," Walker said.

An open house is planned for the new Brian's House in about three weeks.
