SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Talk about a fish tale.

It took all of his strength, plus the help of his dad, for 8-year-old Mike Gerard to pull a catfish out of a barrel.

The youngster was fishing with his friend Adam McCormick Thursday night on the Saginaw River when they caught the monster.

“We thought it was a walleye, and as it went under the surface it felt way heavier because it almost broke my line. So I had to give it to Adam really quick and he had to loosen my drag then I fought it, my arms are still sore from that guy.”

That’s because the fish weighs more than 30 pounds and is more than 40 inches long. Mike used a pretty light weight pole to bring in the behemoth, attracting it with a jig head with a worm on it.

Mike has loved to fish ever since he was a toddler, and his parents say they are proud of their angler son.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all, because he’s really, really into it. He does archery, he does it all and he’s following in my footsteps and my father Lou Gerard’s footsteps,” said Mike Gerard Sr.

“I look and it’s a monster catfish, and my son is crying for happiness and he’s shaking and he told me, mom, I can’t believe I caught that big baby,” said Francia Gerard.

The fish was so big Mike’s father was tempted to say they were going to need a bigger boat. “I was about to, actually, but I didn’t want to because I was focused on getting the fish in, then talking.”

The Gerard’s were taking the fish to the DNR on Friday to find out if it’s a record catch from the Saginaw River.
