Cheerleading coach recovering from bicycle accident

Posted: Updated:

A local coach is facing the biggest challenge of his life after nearly becoming paralyzed in a tragic accident over the weekend.

Howard Schrock is a cheerleading coach at Lake Fenton High School. He broke his neck in a bicycle accident on Saturday, but he's made a promise that when he leaves the hospital he will walk out on his own.

"He was riding his bike on Ripley Road and flew over the handlebars and broke his neck," said Shandra James, Schrock's daughter.

James hopes her father can recover after the freak accident.

"From the time of the injury he could move his arms and he still can do that and he has a little bit of movement in his right leg and we're still waiting to see what happens with his left," James said.

Although that sounds promising, Schrock's family said it's a far cry from the physical strength needed to continue working. Schrock owns his own construction company and money from his business pays the bills.

Schrock, who has five daughters, was also a cheerleading coach in the Linden School District where he helped coach his granddaughter Bella. She too hopes the gentle giant gets back on his feet soon.

"I hope he gets better so he can come back and help with everything," Bella said.

Schrock's son-in-law Michael James arrived quick to the scene to get help.

"When I got there Howard was laying on the dirt road. [He] had a big gash on the back of his head. It was a very scary scene to be honest with you," he said.

As the family deals with the overwhelming situation, they said they've also been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support from the community. They've started a hashtag called Team Howard Strong and they also hope that support remains strong as Howard recovers.
