IMLAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

Michigan isn’t the place you’d expect to run into an alligator, especially in a dollar store parking lot.

But that’s exactly what happened last week in the Lapeer County town of Imlay City.

Police Chief Scott Pike tells TV5 that on July 25th they got a report that an 18” pet alligator had escaped a home a couple of days before.

Early on the morning of the 27th officers got a call that the reptile was seen running around a parking lot in town.

An officer grabbed a dog catch pole and after only two tries was able to grab the angry gator by the tail.

Because officers weren’t able to contact the owner, an exotic pet display at the local fair decided to hold on to the animal until the owner could be reached.

But when the owner went to pick it up, he said the alligator wasn’t his!

The alligator has now found a new home at the Wilderness Trails Zoo in Birch Run.

Meantime, Pike tells TV5 they aren’t actively hunting for another one.
