Firefighter killed in weekend crash

CLIO, MI (WNEM) -

A local firefighter was killed in a traffic crash over the weekend.

The first responders and the community are mourning the loss Michael Wager.

He was off-duty when he was involved in a crash in Genesee County on Saturday.

Wager served on the fire department in Clio for eight years. His death left his fellow firefighters heartbroken.

"Very, very hard right now for everybody," said D.J. Williams, captain of the Clio Fire Department.

The crash happened near the intersection of Dodge Road and Dort Highway. Police said another driver slammed into the side of Wager's van.

"Mike was an all around great guy. Anything that we needed done he did, no questions asked. He never back talked, just perfect guy. Great fireman. Did a lot of our maintenance and stuff for us," Williams said.

Williams said he and Wager became close friends.

"He's one of those guys who would do anything for anybody, no matter what the circumstances were," Williams said.

He said Wager was recently remarried and had kids from a previous marriage.

Williams said his fire department now has a huge void, one he thinks will never be completely filled.

"It's still not real," Williams said. "You can't replace him. You can't replace a guy like him."

Police said the driver who hit Wager has been arrested. They think alcohol was a factor.
