Mid-Michigan is looking to honor TV5’s Sam Merrill by naming a field and concession stand in his honor.

While many of you knew Sam because you welcomed him into your home night after night on the news, others knew him for his involvement with the community. Either way, everyone knew his love for sports.

But above all, his love for his wife Katy and son James stood out.

This year James played his first year of baseball at North Saginaw Township Little League, the first steps to following Sam who played in college.

It’s something Sam would have loved to have been a part of. And now his friends want to immortalize him by naming a new new concession stand, and the baseball fields after him.

"First of all it's a marvelous way to say thank you to someone who really contributed so much to the community and never asked for anything in return. This is a nice baseball field, but it's not indicative of the kind of field we want Sam Merrill's name on, so what we're going to do is redo this complete concession stand, name that after Sam Merrill. And there are three baseball fields out here that we want to name after Sam Merrill as well," said Jimmy Greene who started the gofundme account.

Sam's wife Katy said it's a way for her and Sam's family to give back.

"It’s a way for my family and Sam’s family to give back to the community. Because when this tragic thing happened to Sam the community just rallied around us. We felt everybody just come out in droves and support us. This is just a way for us to give back," said Katy Merrill.

A gofundme account has been set-up to help in efforts to raise the goal of $75,000.
