After nearly a year without a director, a Mid-Michigan animal control has welcomed in new leadership.

TV5 caught up with Lisa Stoffel on her second day on the job as director of Saginaw County Animal Control.

“It seemed like a place that needed a change, and I’m up for a challenge. And I just want to support the community in the best way I can.”

Stoffel comes to the area after working at an animal control in Alaska for the last 10 years.

“I have 7 dogs, 6 horses and a snake that I never planned on getting. But it was turned into the shelter in Alaska and it had almost starved. So, every animal deserves humane treatment.”

Over the last 2 years two animal control directors have been fired in Saginaw County. But Stoffel says she’s ready to create a positive change.

“I’m gonna do the best job I can, because someone has to be here for this team and for the animals.”

Stoffel says she plans to restructure the euthanasia policy so there’s more oversight.

She also wants to improve the main dog area to make it more comforting to the animals and the families looking to adopt.

“There is a lot of knowledge and strength in this shelter. It just needs to be brought into a cohesive team, and reminded that we’re here for the animals.”

Stoffel also wants to improve volunteer programs at the shelter, and strengthen ties with rescue organizations.
