Email scam installs virus on victims' computers

The Attorney General’s Office is warning of an email scam that installs a virus on the victim’s computer.

The email subject reads, “The Office of The Attorney General Complaint.”

Attached to the email is a complaint that “requires” a response. Recipients are then prompted to “view” the complaint by clicking the included link.

When clicked, the link installs malware which steals confidential information.

“It is concerning when someone purports to be another entity to scam hardworking business owners,” said Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette. “It is especially concerning when it claims to be from my office, which is tasked with consumer protection. I encourage anyone who receives this suspicious email to delete it and contact my office.”

If you receive the email, you should immediately delete it. If you click on the link, you should assume your computer has a virus and seek technical assistance.

The email scam received by others is similar to one the below:

From: The Office of The Attorney General [] Sent: Thursday, July 20, 2016 3:46 PM To: * * * Subject: The Office of The Attorney General Complaint

Dear Business Owner:

A complaint has been filed against your Business. Enclosed is a copy of the complaint which requires your response. You have 10 days to file a rebuttal if you so desire. You may view the complaint at the link below.
